2011 Christmas Party
The annual Fraser Sqaudron Christmas Party was held on Dec 3, 2011 at the Sundowner Inn in Delta.
This little event of ours just keeps growing (in fun) and more people keep coming! We had the usual suspects of the Fraser Bridge but we also had members from White Rock and SurDel squadrons who came because they heard we put on a good party. We had at least two non-boaters in attendance because they heard we put on a good party. We also hosted one past Chief Commander and one Regional Training Officer.
Okay, we put on a good party!
There were gifts for all there as well as a 50/50 draw. Byron donated an iPod docking sound system which we sold ticktes for. There were prizes, that looked like bottles of wine prizes for the music bingo.
Music Bingo? What's that?
After dinner and before the night gets all crazy our one man entertainment centre distributes bingo cards with popular song names. Short clips from songs are played and if you have the song on your card you can mark it off.
But wait! It gets better! This is an audience participation event. Random volunteers are chosen to "act out" some of the song titles leading to some interesting and entertaining skits. Throughout the BINGO game we were visited by KISS, the Bangles, Big and Rich, and Wayn and Garth from Waynes World.
HINT for next year. Don't wait too long to volunteer for a skit. The last line-up gets to do a chicken dance.
A big thank you to Rose Easthom for the great party!
Vessel Traffic Services
The Vessel Traffic Services Zones Regulations require vessels of certain sizes to report to vessel traffic services (VTS) at calling-in-points (CIPs) along the coast. These CIP schemes were generated largely in the early days of VTS in the 1970s. While the patterns, routes, density, and types of traffic have changed a little, technology (notably the automating identification system, or AIS) has changed a lot, improving the traffic picture both ashore and at sea.
Our clients are a diverse group, often with different requirements and capabilities. In our ongoing efforts for service excellence we consider all client needs and respond to them through consultation committees and other feedback mechanisms. Our 2008 Levels of Service review revealed that, overall, clients believe we have too many CIPs; mariners also advise us directly on the air that they have the AIS traffic.

The recall applies to older Orion XLT and 12-gauge signals made with orange ABS plastic. XLTs are self-contained, hand-launched signals, while 12-gauge signals have a pistol-style launch and a plastic shell.

Squadron HistoryLike myself, most people probably thought the name Fraser Squadron is derived from the name of the river that divides the communities our squadron serves. Well we are wrong! The "Fraser" in Fraser Squadron is derived from Canadian Forces St. Laurent class destroyer the HMCS Fraser (DDH 233). The stag in the squadron burgee is in fact the HMCS Fraser's ship mascot.
HMCS Fraser began life at the Burrard Dry Dock and the Yarrows Shipyard and was commissioned at Esquimalt in 1957. For the first ten years or so of her her life she patrolled Pacific waters before moving to the east coast.
The Fraser was one of the first warships to be designed and build in Canada. The Fraser was the last of the St. Laurent class in active commission. Over the course of her working years she functioned as a destroyer escort, a destroyer helicopter escort. She was used to demonstrate new Canadian designed technology and was the first Canadian ship to carry an Experimental Towed Array Sonar System and was the first to test the NIXIE torpedo decoy system.
